Garrison Mill Elementary students set out to get the school year kicked off with kindness! Their goal is to spread joy by performing 2000+ Acts of Kindness for others. The kindness campaign is part of Raise Craze, a school fundraiser for the Garrison Mill Education Foundation. It’s a unique way for students to raise funds to support the cause while putting a whole bunch of good in the world. Students ask for donations while performing acts of kindness for others as a way of paying their donors’ kindness forward.
2000 Acts of Kindness is a big goal, but these students can do it. Even the youngest students are making a big impact. Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Cohen led her students in a project to make “Get Well Grams” for any friends who have to visit the school nurse during the day – a sweet gesture to brighten any student’s less than ideal day. It shows other students that they are cared for and that schoolmates wish them well when they’re not feeling their best.
One kind act, one small gesture, could turn an entire day around for someone else. And that kindness? It catches on, creating a ripple effect in the community.
Grandparents have been called just to be told they are loved. Students have cleaned out their closets to donate gently used clothing, books and toys. Cards have been written for hospitalized children, nursing home residents, and first responders. And, Garrison Mill is participating in a school wide act of kindness by collecting breakfast items to donate to local school food pantries. From finding ways to be helpful at home and in their neighborhoods to showing gratitude to the people who take care of us every day like custodial staff, delivery drivers, mail carriers and cafeteria staff, these students are on a mission to send a big message: you’re valued, you’re cared for, and you matter. Because these kids know that making others feel good not only helps that person but can start a movement of kindness throughout the entire community.
