For four decades, the Big Chicken Chorus has been a vibrant part of the cultural fabric of Marietta, bringing the rich sound of barbershop harmony to audiences across the region and beyond. Now, as the chorus celebrates its 40th anniversary, it’s inviting the community to join in the celebration.
Founded in 1986 and named after Marietta’s iconic Big Chicken landmark, the chorus began with a small group of dedicated singers meeting in a local basement. From those humble beginnings, it has grown into an award-winning ensemble with a legacy of musical excellence, camaraderie, and service. Over the years, more than 500 men have sung with the chorus, performing everywhere from local community events to major venues across North America—and even internationally.
“Barbershop harmony is powerful because it brings people together in a unique way—we promise you’ll leave smiling,” said director Michaela Slamka-Johnston.

The Big Chicken Chorus has earned a reputation for both musical quality and entertaining performances. During its competitive peak, the chorus appeared on the international stage for 16 consecutive years and achieved a top-three finish in the world in 1999. Members of the chorus have also been part of some of barbershop’s most celebrated quartets, including international champions FRED and the legendary Gentlemen’s Agreement, further cementing the group’s impact on the art form.
Just as important as its accolades is the chorus’s deep commitment to the community. From Singing Valentines and holiday concerts to performances supporting local charities and civic events, the group has long been dedicated to sharing music that brings people together.
Today, under the direction of Michaela Slamka Johnston—a two-time international gold medalist herself—the Big Chicken Chorus continues to thrive, blending tradition with fresh energy and welcoming audiences of all ages.
As part of its 40th anniversary season, the chorus will present its Summer Show on Sunday, July 12 at 3:00 PM at Lassiter Concert Hall in Marietta. Local quartets, Classic Cuts, Fourmation, and Avoid the Frogs (ladies’ quartet) will be performing. The performance promises an afternoon of harmony, humor, and heartfelt entertainment.
