For decades, Cobb athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers have played an important role in supporting Georgia Special Olympics and its mission of empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports, inclusion, and community. From local events and fund raising efforts to statewide competitions, the partnership between Cobb and Georgia Special Olympics continues to showcase the power of encouragement, determination, and teamwork both on and off the field.
What’s so SPECIAL about Cobb County Special Olympics?
Fun! Free! & Inclusive!
Special Olympics Cobb is fun for everyone. Over 18 different sports offered in Cobb County:
- Softball (4 teams) (Fall) * Table Tennis • Cycling (Fall) * Tennis
- Bocce Ball (Fall) * Flag Football • Gymnastics (Summer & Winter) * Pickleball • Basketball (3×3 and Skills) * Golf
- Swimming * Track and Field • Bowling * Cheerleading • Skiing * Kayaking • Volleyball
Registration for Fall Games starts June 1st with many of the practices starting in late July.
3 STATE OLYMPIC EVENTS OFFERED OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR:
- Winter Games (end of Jan hosted by Cobb County) • Summer Games (end of May held at Emory University) • Fall Games (end of Oct in Valdosta GA)
Most importantly you are not required to participate in the Olympics to enjoy sports. You can just come to practice and get some exercise and meet new friends. We just want you or your athlete to come and enjoy the experience and the fun that comes from interacting with other athletes.
There is no charge for your participation in Special Olympics. In fact, we cover all travel expenses for events as well as we provide your uniform, equipment and coaches.
We welcome all athletes with special needs to come and try any sport they like. We provide many volunteers for each sport to assist the athletes, so no experience is needed. We have only 3 requirements for participation:
- Must fill out a medical form
- Must be at least 8 years of age (for most sports) • Try to have a smile and enjoy.
Cobb County has offered Special Olympics programming for over XXX years and operates out of the Windy Hill Community Center. For more information, please con tact Jason Alles at jason.alles@cobbounty.gov.
