First graders from Mt. Bethel Elementary received a visit from a real American Hero – who came with an amazing gift to the school.

Army Sergeant First Class Sims donated a flag to the school, complete with the letters the then-kindergarten students sent to him while he was stationed in Iraq last year. Sergeant Sims spoke to students about what it means to be a soldier, the importance of being not only a good leader but also a good follower, and making hard right decisions over easy wrong choices.

Students had great questions and asked about training, jumping out of airplanes, life when deployed, and how valuable these letters are for men and women who are serving the country and away from their families.

The flag hangs in a place of prominence at Mt. Bethel so all students can see it every day. Mt. Bethel is grateful for the troops who guarantee the safety and freedom of U.S. citizens, and to have the opportunity to learn from a true hero.
