The Joanne P. Stratton Library will officially reopen its doors to the public at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4, following a comprehensive $500,000 interior modernization project. Cobb County library officials announced on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
The renovation, funded by the 2022 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), has reimagined the facility’s interior to meet the evolving needs of the Marietta community. Key upgrades include:
• New Study Rooms: Two dedicated spaces designed for focused work or small meetings (accommodating 1–2 people).
• Modernized Interior: Complete installation of new carpeting and fresh paint, complemented by updated contemporaryfurniture.
• Enhanced Public & Staff Areas: Significant upgrades to the community meeting room and staff work zones to improve service efficiency and event capabilities. “Stratton Library is a vibrant center for community growth, fueling early literacy, workforce development, and vital connections,” said Keith Schuermann, Cobb County Library Director. “This project has transformed our space, significantly elevating access to resources and empowering community success.”
For over 50 years, the Stratton facility has been more than just a building; it has served as a vital cornerstone for local neighborhoods, apartment communities, and small businesses alike. Since first opening its doors in 1974, the library has evolved alongside the growing Marietta area.
The facility is named in honor of Joanne P. Stratton, who served as the library system’s director from 1968 to 1974. A pioneer in the system, Stratton began her career as a bookmobile librarian in 1959 and was instrumental in consolidating the various independent city libraries into a unified countywide system. Her legacy includes the establishment of the Georgia Room, a premier resource for state and local history.
This latest $500,000 investment ensures that while the library honors Stratton’s vision and its own 50-year heritage, it remains a cutting-edge hub for modern learners, remote workers, and families for decades to come.
The Stratton Library hours are Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information on events and resources of Stratton Library, please visit cobbcounty.gov/library or contact the branch directly at 770-528-2522.
