Today, June 30, marks World Social Media Day, where we recognize the important role it plays in our society and celebrate the way it has connected us.

Back in 2010, the digital publisher Mashable decided that it would nice to recognize the impact that social media has had on how we communicate. Through the various social platforms, we’re able to connect with friends, make new friends, facilitate business, and grow our networks on a global scale.

Social media has revolutionized how we talk to each other around the world. That seems deserving of a day of recognition, doesn’t it?

Consider that we’ve only been at this social media game for a few years: Friendster launched in 2002 followed by MySpace in 2003 and Facebook in 2004. Twitter forced us to keep it to fewer than 140 characters in 2006, and Instagram has had us telling stories with pictures since 2010.
